An unfortunate fall by an adult education student at the Metropolitan Museum of Art into a $130 million Pablo Picasso masterpiece ripped a six-inch tear into the painting.
"The Actor," painted in 1904-05 by Picasso, was immediately taken to the museum’s conservation studio, where curators said they expected it to make a full recovery from a tear to the bottom right hand corner.
"Fortunately, the damage did not occur in a focal point of the composition," the Met said in a statement released Friday.
The museum said the repair will take a few weeks and is expected to return to the museum’s walls in time for the Picasso exhibition on April 27.
The canvas — about 6 feet by 4 feet — was hanging on the wall of a second-floor gallery with other early Picassos. It was painted by the famous artist in the winter of 1904-’05 and was donated to the museum in 1952.
When contacted on Monday, the museum said there were no further updates on the condition of the painting.
